Chapter three.

A Treasure Hunt in Church!

bible
The sun continued to communicate its warmth and radiance upon the rutted country road along which Papa Paws and his family paraded in the direction of church. Within minutes they had shuffled into their seats. As the sun filtered through through stained glass windows, Puff stared at the multi-coloured glass which revealed figures of red and blue robed people; one with a ship, another with a lamb and another with a gospel.

She gazed wrapped in wonder at all of the pictures highlighted by the sun and then she elbowed old Papa. 'Papa, who are these people on the windows?'

'Saints of old,' he answered in a soft voice not wanting to disturb anyone.

'What are saints?' asked Puff in her normal gruff voice, oblivious of her quiet surroundings.

Padders had been listening too and he interrupted saying, 'Puff, it is obvious that they are just people that the light shines through.'

Papa Paws smiled and said, ' I couldn't answer that better myself. A saint is simply a person who the light of Jesus shines through to others. Remember Jesus said, " I am the Light of the world", and then He turned one day to His followers and said a very wonderful thing to them, " You are the lights of the world. let your light shine before men."'

'Shh, shhh,' whispered Mama Paws nodding her head in the direction of the pulpit. The service was about to begin, but Puff was in a daydream about those colourful saints on the window. In fact she did not hear a single word until it was time for the children's talk.

'Good Morning, boys and girls.'

Puff loved this part. Padders too. If volunteers were needed, they were at the front of the queue.

But today the pastor brought all the young ones to the front and said that they would be thinking about the Bible and he held up a big black leather-bound Bible. Puff could see on the front lovely gold lettering which spelt the words The Holy Bible.

And he said, 'Now the Bible is like some common objects which I have hidden in this church. First of all I will give you a clue in rhyme as to their whereabouts. Once you can solve the clue and find the object you must bring it to me and I shall tell you why it is like the Bible.'

'A treasure hunt!' shouted Puff in delight.

Everyone chuckled and finally settled down again.

'Is everyone listening? Clue number one...'

Puff had her right foot forward ready to run even before hearing the clue!

'You'll find this thing which is coloured white, up some steps to quite a height.'

Padders immediately thought 'pulpit' and off he dashed leaving the rest still scratching their heads. Sure enough up the steps and in the pulpit there was something white. Could this be it? he wondered. He couldn't see anything else that was white, though he was unsure how this object could be linked to the Bible. It was a milk bottle. Maybe the pastor had it in the pulpit for a drink if his throat became dry and Padders didn't know what to do. Eventually he grabbed it and presented it.

'Well done, young Padders! You have brought me some milk. Milk is good for us and helps us to grow and be nourished.'

Puff interrupted and told everyone how she had porridge for breakfast and a milkshake for elevenses and ...!

The pastor, aware of the time ticking by, patted her on the head and said, 'That's great, Puff, because milk will make you grow and be healthy. The Bible is like milk because it helps us to grow as well. It says, 'Crave milk so that by it you may grow up in your salvation...' Of course he went on to say that by reading the Bible we can grow up spiritually and learn to obey God as we ought to.

Puff was vaguely listening to his words as she was more concerned about the second clue and object.

'Is everyone ready for the second clue? Beside a thing that gives us heat, you'll find a jar that's very sweet.'

Puff's brain was on overdrive. What gives me heat? My fur? My coat? Um, the sun? The church radiator! Off she sped but was just too late because someone else had reached the radiator before her and found a jar of honey. Puff tried to wrestle with her and wrench it out of her hands but to no avail.

'Well done, young Jemima! Here we have a jar of honey.'

Padders drooled at the sight of something so sweet and sticky and simply delicious. The pastor told them the words of psalm 119, 'How sweet are God's words to my taste, sweeter than honey in my mouth.'

He reminded them that God has given lots of promises and blessings in the Bible, ones that we can claim for ourselves. It tells us many great things that are pleasant and pleasing to our taste. It teaches us how to prosper and be successful in every area of life.

Puff hadn't heard a word. She was determined to solve the third and final clue and she waited for it like an animal awaiting its prey.

'Are we ready for clue number three? Below a list that looks like sums, is something to use when winter comes.'

She knew it. After all, she had counted them time and again! It was the hymn list! Like a sheet of lightning she raced to the exact location and there she found a torch. Holding it up as if she had won the Olympic games she wadddled back and handed it over.

And the minister said, 'If we switch it on, it lights up a little circle around us. Likewise the Bible shows us our way and guides us.' He quoted from it. 'Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path,' he said. 'So boys and girls, the Bible is like milk and can help us grow up and be strong spiritually and know God more. Our faith becomes stronger because faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. The Bible is also like honey, full of sweet things like the promises of God, and it is like a torch which lights up the way ahead of us. It helps us keep on track.'

Well Puff never forgot that day, or let anyone else forget it either. That night in bed she thought of those saints on the stained glass, simply people who allowed the light of God to shine through them, and then she thought of her great discovery under the hymn list until she slipped into her peaceful slumber and didn't open an eyelid until morning.
